U12 Girls
Who:
girls aged 11 – 12 (born 2005 & 2006)

Fees:
$225 per player (plus online fees)

Included:
  • 20+ Practices (focus on fun and skills development)
  • 4+ Rugby Festivals
  • 3+ club on club games
  • 1 out of town tournament
  • tackling and injury awareness workshop May 25th
  • Bytown Blues training shirt and age sized rugby ball (part of registration fee)

  • May 1 – May 10 – Brantwood Park (near baseball diamond)
  • May 10 – June 28 – Canterbury High School

Format:
  • 7 a side Rugby, 11 minute halves (for festivals), 15 minute halves (for league games)
  • No rucking or mauling, uncontested scrums and lineouts
  • Maximum 2 tacklers
  • Tackle is called by the ref, play stops, tackled player places the ball for own team
  • Each team gets 5 tackles (if there are no turnovers), on the 6th it is turned over to the other team
  • No fending, no high tackles, no shirt pulling
  • By convention and agreement between coaches, we play minimum 3 passes per possession

Team Principles:
  • Respect
    • this is extremely important for rugby and is emphasized frequently by the coaches
    • respect for refs, the opposition, teammates, coaches, parents, and themselves
  • Equal playing time

    • Balanced teams at all festival and league games
    • in 2016 we had 2 teams at the festivals
    • This year we may have 3 teams
  • League is co-ed

    • this year we have dedicated girls coaches who will run separate practices
    • however we will combine teams for the girls that want to play in the co-ed format
  • Competitive teams for travel tournaments
  • Safety focus:

    • training for all coaches, including a Rugby Ontario tackling clinic
    • roughly half of all our practice time is dedicated to teaching kids how to tackle safely and effectively
    • this year we have a dedicated head injury trainer
    • who’s only job is to watch for head knocks
    • remove the player for a mandatory stand-down time
